The Town of Yorktown continues to be impacted by severe cold temperatures and the impacts of last night's strong winds. A warming center is currently OPEN at the Albert A. Capellini Community Cultural Center (1974 Commerce St.). The warming center will remain OPEN UNTIL AT LEAST 3:00 PM TODAY, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4th. A decision to leave the center open past 3:00 pm will be made this afternoon after evaluating the progress of electrical restoration throughout town. Please enter the warming center through the lower level of the Albert A. Capellini Community Cultural Center next to Yorktown Stage.
The warming center CAN ACCOMDATE pets. We ask that if you must bring a pet, the pet MUST be able to be controlled at all times. Dogs MUST be leashed at all times and cats MUST be in an appropriate cat carrier. As a reminder, please treat any downed wires as live wires. Do not touch downed wires and report them directly to your utility company if on private property or to the Yorktown Police Department if they are on public roadways. Intersections where traffic lights are without power should be treated as 4-way stop signs. Yorktown Police report that the following roadways are CLOSED (unless noted) due to downed trees & wires. While the high winds have subsided, we urge residents to exercise caution when traveling and leave extra travel time. As a reminder, the Yorktown Police Department does NOT have any information regarding electrical restoration times. It is with profound sadness that I share with the public that Yorktown Police Department Captain Kenneth Sgroi, age 37, passed away after a short illness, on January 2, 2023. Captain Sgroi leaves behind a wife and two young children, ages five and three. He was promoted posthumously to the rank of Captain on Saturday, January 7, 2023. All past and future details regarding our brother Kenny has been or will be shared on the Yorktown Police Department Facebook page. Chief of Police January 8, 2023 @ 8:30 a.m. Yorktown Police report the arrest of 32 year old Yorktown man and a 19 year old Yorktown man, who are charged with Assault 2nd Degree, a Class “D” Felony, Assault 3rd Degree, a Class “A” Misdemeanor, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class “A” Misdemeanor, and Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, a Class “A” Misdemeanor.
On December 23, 2022 at about 12:12 pm, Yorktown Police Officers were dispatched to a report of an assault in progress at a Yorktown residence. Officers responded to the residence and initiated an investigation. Upon the officers' arrival, the defendants had already left the scene. Police interviewed the victims, one of whom was able to identify the defendants. The investigation continued and it is alleged the defendants, while acting in concert with each other, punched, kicked and choked one victim, causing physical injuries. During the alleged assault, physical injury was caused to a 74-year-old victim after she was allegedly shoved to the ground by the defendants. In addition, the entire incident allegedly occurred in the presence of a 7-year-old child. EMS was called to the scene for one of the victims, who was transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment. On December 27, 2022 at about 6:00 pm, the defendants voluntarily surrendered themselves at Yorktown Police Headquarters. Both were arrested and processed on the above charges, then arraigned in the Yorktown Justice Court by the Honorable Gary Raniolo, who issued a Temporary Order of Protection in favor of the victims and ordered both held on bail-which they were unable to post. The defendants were turned over to Westchester County Corrections and brought to the Westchester County Jail. The defendants are due to appear in the Yorktown Justice Court on January 3, 2023 at 6:00 pm. Yorktown Police report the arrest of a 43-year-old Yorktown woman, who is charged with Assault 2nd Degree, a Class "D" Felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree, a Class "A" Misdemeanor and Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, a Class "A" Misdemeanor.
On December 24, 2022, at approximately 3:10 am, Yorktown Police responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a residence. Upon arrival, they met with the victim who was bleeding from the back of the neck. After an investigation on scene, it was determined that while arguing with the defendant, the defendant allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim on the back of the neck. The defendant also allegedly kicked a bathroom door causing damage to the door frame. The defendant, who was still on scene, was placed under arrest by P.O Rana and transported to Yorktown Police Headquarters for processing. Following processing on the above charges, the defendant was arraigned by the Honorable Gary Raniolo, who issued an Order of Protection on behalf of the victim. The defendant was released on her own recognizance and is due to appear in Yorktown Justice Court on January 17, 2023 at 6:00 pm. |
